All the summer through poor Thumbelina lived alone in
the forest. She plaited herself a bed of green stalks and hung it up under a
large dark leaf so that no rain might fall on her. She gathered honey from
flowers and every morning drank the dew which lay on the leaves. I n this way
she spent the summer and autumn, but then winter came – the long cold winter.
The birds which had sung so sweetly for her flew away on their long journeys.
The trees and flowers withered, the large dark leaf which she had lived under
shriveled up and became nothing but a yellow, withered stem, and she felt
frightfully cold, for her clothes were now all torn and she herself was so tiny
and frail.

Long, long ago there was only
one fire in the northland. An old man and his son took turns in caring for it,
and kept it burning day and night. Their great enemy was the bear. He wanted
them to die so that he could have the northland to himself. One day the old man
became ill, and the boy had to look after the fire and care for his sick
father. At last he became so tired that he fell fast asleep. The bear crept to
the fire and beat it out with his great paws, and then went off chuckling. A
little robin flew down. She found a spark and fanned it with her wings. After a
while her breast was burned but she kept on fanning the fire till a fine blaze
started. She had saved the northland! Ever since that day robins have had red
breasts.

It was icy this morning͵ so my friend Lucy and I decided to go skating.
We knew just the place ‒ the frozen pond near the police station. There was a
notice there saying it was safe to slide.
We had an exciting time͵ racing and dancing on the ice͵ and making fancy
patterns with our skates. I fell over once or twice͵ but it didnʼt hurt much.
Afterwards we had spicy rice for lunch ‒ very nice!

Kitchen
Capers
Remy, the rat, dreamt of becoming a chef. One day, in
the kitchen of his favourite restaurant, he saw Linguini, the garbage boy,
fixing a spilt soup. Linguini was adding one wrong ingredient after another. ʼʼ
I have to do something, ʼʼ thought Remy. So, he ran down to help the shocked
Linguini! With amazing speed, Remy tossed some carefully chosen ingredients
into the soup. He knew exactly which ingredients would taste good!
Just in time, the soup was ready. A waiter took a
bowlful out to a customer in the restaurant. Suddenly, Remy and Linguini heard
shouting. Skinner, the restaurantʼs mean chef, was coming! He would be very
angry if he saw a rat in his kitchen. Linguini quickly hid Remy under a
colander. ʼʼ How dare you cook in my kitchen! ʼʼ Skinner shouted. He was very
angry with Linguini, but he couldnʼt sack him because the soup tasted
delicious! While they were talking͵ Remy made a run for the window. But Skinner
spotted him. ʼʼ Catch it and dispose of it! ʼʼ Skinner shouted to Linguini. But
instead of getting rid of Remy, Linguini made a deal with him. ʼʼ Iʼll let you
out of the jar͵ if you promise to help me cook, ʼʼ said Linguini. Remy agreed.
So, Linguini hid Remy in his shirt and they returned to the kitchen. That
night, Linguini and Remy went home to practise cooking. Remy showed Linguini
how to cook by tugging his hair from inside his hat. With Linguiniʼs help, Remyʼs
dream had come true ‒ he was a chef!

A Bad Breakfast
One morning, Marlin and Nemo went to the Drop-off for breakfast. They
gasped in wonder, as tasty pieces of cake drifted down around them. ʼʼ Itʼs
raining food!ʼʼ giggled Nemo, as he went to take a bite. ʼʼ Wait! ʼʼ cried
Marlin. Heʼd noticed that each piece of cake was attached to a fishing line. ʼʼ
As if there werenʼt enough bad things in the sea, like barracudas and
jellyfish! Now weʼve got to put up with humans, too! ʼʼ groaned Marlin. ʼʼ When
the fish wake up, theyʼll bite the food before they realise! Weʼve got to keep
them away! ʼʼ cried Marlin. He quickly warned two other fish. As more and more
fish arrived at the Drop ‒ off, became harder and harder to warn them all. ʼʼ
We canʼt get to everyone in time! ʼʼ puffed Nemo. Suddenly, Marlin had a great
idea. ʼʼ I know! We need to play them at their own game! ʼʼ he thought. So,
Marlin swam out to sea, to find a buoy. Marlin knew thatʼs where lots of seagulls would be. ʼʼ MINE! ʼʼ
screeched the seagulls, as Marlin surfaced. They chased him back to the Drop ‒
off. When the seagulls saw the cake on the boats, they forgot about Marlin. The
fish cheered, as fishermen got fed up with the seagulls and roared away!

Halloween
October 31 is Halloween. In America

people buy pumpkins. They cut a face in the pumpkin. This scares evil spirits!
On Halloween night, children
wear costumes and go trick-or-treating. They go from house to house and people
give them sweets and chocolate. If the children don’t get chocolate and sweets,
they play a ‘trick’! At Halloween Americans buy $2billion of sweets and

WORLD LARGEST
Origami Giraffe
New Record
Himanshu Agrawal from Origami
Mitra Club says, “I have been doing Origami for the last 14 years”. So I have lots of experience in this area”.
He and nine students spent 12 hours folding one sheet of paper – 35
feet*35 feet - to create a 20
feet high origami giraffe which sets the world record
for the Largest Origami Giraffe.
“Usually this design for a
giraffe takes about 10 minutes to fold”, he said.
Origami Challenge
This was really slow process and there where many setbacks along the
way, as the layers got unfolded. The smallest move took the largest effort. But
ultimately it was very rewarding to complete and see it mounted on a bamboo
structure.
Complexity
This model has been designed by the American origamist Mr. John
Montroll. It has been marced level 3 of the complexity on a scale from 1 to 4
by the designer. Folding this Origami Giraffe requires almost 103 moves
and 70 creases on the paper.

Going to school
Don’t feel like going to school
today? Well, you’re lucky because 300 million children can’t go to school.
Unfortunately, most of these children live in developing countries and are very
poor so they have to work. Sometimes their parents can’t buy the books or the
school uniform. Sometimes children don’t
attend school for reasons. For the 140 children living in the area
around Alice Springs in Australia ,
getting to school can take days. Therefore, the School of the Air provides
radio classes which children do at home.
How do children feel when
they’re at school? In the United
States there have been many shootings in
schools so most now have security for anyone entering the school. However, 70%
of American students still don’t feel safe in their schools!
